About IIE

The Institute of International Education (IIE) was founded in 1919 on the belief that education makes the world a more just, fair, and peaceful place. We remain dedicated to that belief today. We deliver transformative opportunities in more than 180 countries to educate future leaders, place threatened artists and scholars in safety, aid students during emergencies, and send underserved college students abroad. Four key IIE programs empower these changemakers to rebuild their lives and pursue their dreams.

Helping Scholars in Crisis: Scholar Rescue Fund
Scholars suffer harassment, detention, torture, and other forms of persecution because of their research, activism, and ideas. The IIE Scholar Rescue Fund is the only global program that arranges and funds fellowships for threatened and displaced scholars at partnering higher education institutions worldwide.

Supporting Refugee and Displaced Students: Odyssey Scholarship
Obtaining admission and attending university is nearly impossible for displaced and refugee students. The IIE Odyssey Scholarship supports these individuals throughout the application, admission, and academic degree programs so they can persevere despite all odds.

Empowering Threatened Artists: Artist Protection Fund
Artists are often the first to be repressed, often violently so. The IIE Artist Protection Fund is the only global program that provides artists with fellowship funding, placement, mentoring, and inclusion in a comprehensive network of artistic and social support.

Providing Aid to Students: Emergency Student Fund
Natural disasters, global pandemics, civil wars, or political and economic collapse can have devastating effects on students’ abilities to complete their education. The IIE Emergency Student Fund provides urgent financial assistance to help international students in crisis so they can remain in school and make progress toward their academic degree.

IIE initiatives are sustained by the generosity of donors who share the conviction that international education can lead to greater peace and understanding in an interconnected world.
